Don’t miss reading the fine article in this edition of the Innovator written by Mark Parsek, Disaster Relief Coordinator for our Florida Baptist Association. One thing you will notice is that he did not mention himself. The day of the Capitola tornado, I was in Dothan, Alabama with my mother. I did not even know about the tornado. It is good when our Association’s ministries can meet immediate needs due to faithful and caring people who know what to do and get it done! Thank you Mark Prasek, Mark and Marcus Winchester, our many unnamed laborers, and to Sherri, right here in our office, who did what needed to be done, informing our people of the needs, and office coordination where needed.

Also, read “Ideas for Impact” in this Innovator, written by Garry Goodin. He presents a need that nine of our churches have, needs that can easily be met by our Association of Churches.

Sometimes others “say it better” than I. Thank you for being there for one another!

SPACE NEEDED FOR NINE CHURCHES TO MEET

If you know of an empty space where a church could meet, please contact the Association office. Several thousand Christians in 55 churches, praying and thinking together, should be able to solve this opportunity.

There are currently nine churches in our Association looking for a better place to meet so their churches can continue to grow. These nine churches have between 20 and 300 members attending each week. They are meeting in rented facilities, like schools and restaurants, which they have either outgrown or are too expensive for a small church to afford. Five churches need worship space for less than 100. Two churches need space for 200 in worship. Two churches need space for 400 in worship. All of the churches need some additional space for child care and Sunday School.

June 8-13, 2008

WORLD CHANGERS are coming to the Florida Baptist Association the week of June 8-13, 2008. We are privileged to have this group work with us. Not only will the residents whose homes will be repaired and the young people who are coming be blessed, but we also will be blessed sharing in this mission work.

Ways for your church to be directly involved in this mission project

2. Volunteers to be runners and/or supervisors (Must be 18 or older)

3. If you are good with tools and handiwork you may be a candidate to serve as a crew chief or supervisor (Must be 21 or older)

4. A prayer coordinator from each church to prayer-walk your Job site

5. On-site first aid person (First Aid and CPR certified)

6. Doctor on call (Not needed on-site)

7. We will need to borrow several ladders

8. Volunteers to record local newscasts involving World Changers

Disaster Relief News

It Worked!

Or better put - God’s people worked – and God worked through His people!

Friday, March 7, 2008 began in horror for the residents of Capitola as a tornado ravaged many homes there. Before most people had even heard of the tornado touching down, representatives of the Florida Baptist Association of Churches were on site. Mark Winchester of Faith Baptist Church was at ground zero at 8:30 AM providing critical damage assessment reports to our Association. The human and capital assets of the Association’s Disaster Relief infrastructure were immediately put into overdrive. Within minutes, the Association office mobilized our veteran chain saw teams. “Blue Tarp” for temporary roof repairs was being distributed to those homeowners who could do their own repairs. By noon, eight chains saws were buzzing in the hands of our chain saw team as they removed trees that had fallen on four houses. Meanwhile, the Association office began acquiring the materials that would be needed the next day. Disaster Relief Funds were released immediately to purchase temporary roof repair materials and other essentials that would be needed the next day. By the end of the day, 12 Florida Baptist Association volunteers had left their jobs behind to help cut trees.

At 7 am Saturday, volunteer teams ranging from rookies to battle hardened Disaster Relief veterans from several of our Association churches began to converge on the tornado stricken homes.  Debris cleanup, chain saw work, and temporary roof repairs continued throughout the day. As a result, by day’s end, four homes were able to be reinhabited.  Some 30 volunteers from Florida Baptist Association churches participated.

It worked – because God’s people from our Florida Baptist Association churches acted upon their heartfelt compassion to minister to those in need. It could not have happened without the volunteers and the financial support of our churches.

Mark Prasek
