Inter-Mission with David

David Southerland

There are three church pastors, each of a different denomination, who have related to me that if it weren’t for Southern Baptist their churches would be a quarter to one half their present size. That was no surprise to me, but it gave me pause to ponder, why?

I have discovered the following:

  1.  Information – Many of our people do not know who we are and why we are here. As Southern Baptists they haven’t been taught their heritage or have forgotten their heritage.

  2.  Residence – People often look for a church nearest their place of residence. Today, a church’s denomination is not considered as important as it once was in choosing a place of worship.

  3.  Conflict – It has happened, is happening and will happen that people, for various reasons, want to leave their churches, but for some reason do not consider other Southern Baptist Churches within their community a viable worship arena for meeting their particular needs.

  4.  Doctrine - Very rarely is this the stated reason, at least to me, but I have heard it.

  5.  Money – Baptists believe and teach giving of the tithe through the local church. We also believe in growth and participation in pledging to finance the need for new buildings. Some don’t. Enough said.

  6.  Marriage – This is usually to “keep the family together” in the same the church experience in which the dominant partner may not be Southern Baptist.

  7.  P.C. – Well you figure this one out… I’m not referencing to a “Personal Computer”.

I am Southern Baptist because:

  1.  I believe in the Baptist Faith and Message.

  2.  We are willing to accept churches that are “different” but hold in common our unalterable faith in Jesus Christ as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

  3.  We still do missions cooperatively. The smallest church is equal to the largest church in missions outreach, through their own church’s mission outreach budget, the normal 2% Association giving, and 8-10% Cooperative Program giving.

I am happy we have been able to evangelize to the degree that so many people know Christ but are not members of our Southern Baptist churches. It does, though, help remind me that we need to continue to plant churches to meet various needs, special needs that are often more cultural than spiritual and increasingly difficult to meet in a simple church setting. I am happier still, so many stay with us, believe in our mission and support it unselfishly and with commitment and joy through their local church membership, personal participation, prayers, and their tithes and offerings and – further – lead their children, through personal example to do the same! God bless you all!

Baptist Campus Ministry

It’s good to be in Tallahassee! Tiffany and I have enjoyed the last few weeks, which has begun a new chapter in our lives in Seminole Territory! We can’t wait to meet you so please let us know when a good time would be to get to know you better. The local church is the reason for the existence of the BCM through the Cooperative Program and we are certainly blessed to have the opportunity to partner with you in ministry.

We are excited about the upcoming fall semester and ask that you be in prayer for our campuses. Remember, the college and university campuses are not only the pulse of the direction of American culture but also house the future leaders of this nation as well as the world. As our state collegiate ministries director Loy Reed says, “You can truly impact the world from the university campus.” We look forward to working with each of you as we connect students to local churches and make disciples of Jesus Christ in Tallahassee! Please take a look at the following list of opportunities and resources where we can begin to reach the world for Christ and contact us with any interests or questions (850) 222-4444. Feel free to also check us out on www.fsubcm.org to catch up on the latest with campus ministry.
