Inter-Mission with David

David Southerland

The East Hill Baptist Church VBS mission offering last year was designated for Haiti for distribution through our Haitian pastors. It was needed, and the situation remains desperate, even more so now that the hurricane season is upon us.

Our Florida Baptist Convention reports that conversions in Haiti since 1/12/10 are 135,146. Almost 50,000 of those conversions were a part of churches in the areas of Jacmel, Cayes, and Jeremie. One hundred-thirty-five churches of the Haitian Baptist Confraternite (Convention/Fellowship) have been planted. To God by the glory!

As an Association, we are committed to long term support for our Haitian brothers and sisters and are just now organizing a water well location and restoration project through our Association Haiti Group, in concert with Joseph Gaston (presently in Haiti), Director, Haitian Church Development Department, Florida  Baptist Convention. Members of the Association Haitian Group include the following: George Smith, Chris Smith, Dan Sowell, Tom Albanese, Lewis Pollard, Doyle Bell and Jim Lehman. We have had and shall have input from Scott Bonnell (Hope for Haiti) and Thomasville Road Baptist Church, who has done a great deal of work with Living Hope Missions in Haiti under the leadership of Steve Vaughan (Minister of Missions) where one of our group’s particpants, Tom Albanese, is a member. Six members of our Haiti Group have served in Haiti

During this month, our eyes are also upon our beautiful coastal waters, and our hearts with our coastal churches and their peoples’ incomes from the seafood industry. They are our people and we’ll need to stand with them should the oil spill continue to worsen. Already, it has strongly affected some of our churches’ people. We will keep you informed. Continue to pray.

This year, the East Hill Baptist Church VBS mission offering will be toward the impact of the oil spill in Franklin County, after contact with Mark Mercer, Pastor of First Baptist Church, Carrabelle about their current and anticipated needs. I hope that you and your church might also consider directing your VBS mission offerings toward our people in need in Franklin County due to the oil spill.

One other item for prayer: the Southern Baptist Convention convenes in Orlando, June 15-16. This year’s convention will be unique! Pray.

Annual Furniture Drive for BCM International Ministry

Have any furniture that you need to get rid of?  Friends of Internationals has an annual furniture drive every August where we give away new and used furniture to incoming international students at Florida State University.  We are trying to get a head start on finding furniture in the Tallahassee area.  Around 100 students receive furniture from us every year.  We would be glad to come by and pick it up.  We have had televisions, beds, couches, recliners, bicycles, chests, bookshelves, desks, carpets, silverware, cups, plates, and all kitchen supplies donated in years past.  We would gladly accept any type of donation.

If you would like to donate, please contact Matthew Gille at (850) 222-4444.
